Step parent issues

So I have two step daughters 8&10. Their father encouraged me to discipline them. But if I do there has been times when he’ll get upset with me about maybe my tone of voice....am I wrong for having the mindset ”if you don’t like it don’t ask”. That is how I discipline and will do so if my child gets out of line (our son together). Damned if I do damned if I don’t
